lots of reasons to take a pause at this time of year

my brother was in town last weekend.  he rolled in on thor's day and i we did some hanging out.  it was great.  we talked about a lot of useful stuff and even better was talking about all of the useless shit.  i love my brother.  he "gets" it.  we didn't have the evil dysfunctional family, just the stock dysfunctions with very few upgrades.  as a result, we're quirky.  we have a lot of shorthand and the jokes almost don't need to be made out loud.  a lot more can be said with the patented half-smile and shrug or lifting of eyebrows.  he's a good guy, if a little lost.  hopefully, he'll not take as long as i did to figure shit out.  and good luck to him!

it was, if you might have heard in the hole, st. hulver's day last saturday and that means a celebration of the birth of the dude.  we had a pretty full house.  plenty of family (blood and extended) roaming around.  we did see thebozes, which was hell sweet.  they got brought the dude one of these: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domo-kun and he loves it.  i need to archive some things for his 14th birthday.  little miss theboz is still cute as all get out. that girl is something else.

it was kind of surprising to see the goodly pile of folks and all of the dude's little friends.  opening presents was a lot of work and when the cake showed up and everyone started singing, he just balled his eyes out and grabbed for mommy.  for all he knew, we were going to celebrate his birthday with some sort of "feast on the baby" ritual.  poor kid.  but he ate half of his massive cake later that night.  we have roughly 500 pictures of him covered in frosting and loaded up.  i think that the dog got sick on the frosting, silly pup.

so the dude is one!  long live the dude!

and tomorrow is the 3rd anniversary of my first date with stacky.  the 3rd of september we'll celebrate 2 years of being married.  actually, all of the celebrating has been scheduled for tomorrow night.  the dude is going to his grandparents for the night and we are hitting a nice little restaurant on our side of town that might actually require wearing pants.  i think that speaks for itself.  it will be nice to slow down and enjoy an evening.  hell, we might be awake at 10 pm.  you.  Never.  KNOW!  we're wild like that.  don't be too jealous.

for the record, if this latest weather thing fucks up the gulf and gets in the way of me riding my bike all over brazos bend, i'ma gonna be pissed.  fucking weather.  i need less of it.  someone call me when it's fall.  or winter.  what?  i'm in texas?  fuck.

my job.  wow.  i don't talk about it.

with my brother here and all of the festivities, my projects have fallen behind.  that always sucks ass.  fortunately for me, i'm taking off friday and tuesday turning a 3-day weekend into a 5-day weekend.  take that, bitches!  i might be able to get a few things done.  i have low expectations because a major focus of this time off will be napping.  i just want a fucking nap.  the end.

the (hopefully) impending drop in temperatures should increase our frequency of outdoor activities.  camping here we come!  there are lots of places i want to hit and we really need to plan a semi-serious adventure for the spring.  we're weighing our options.

more to say, but i have to blow out of here by 3 my time.

The birthday party was a good time by theboz (4.00 / 1) #3 Thu Aug 28, 2008 at 10:45:44 AM EST
You even reminded me of how great bratwurst are, so I'll have to grill some up soon as well.  We definitely have to get together some time.  My wife and I were talking about inviting you all over for some ceviche or something.  I don't recall if you and Stacky like seafood or not, but if you do my wife makes the best ceviche in Texas.

That's great by theboz (2.00 / 0) #11 Thu Aug 28, 2008 at 04:24:39 PM EST
Since you and clock are both up for it, emails will be sent probably within a few days to figure it out.  If you two can get blixco, atreides, riceowlguy, and any other people we like to come that's great too.

Oh yeah by theboz (4.00 / 1) #4 Thu Aug 28, 2008 at 10:55:01 AM EST
I forgot but I overheard part of a conversation Stacky's dad had with someone sitting over on the sofa during the gift opening time.  Basically, I think it was someone getting on to him for being vegan and saying something like, "When God wants you to go, you're going to go."  He didn't like that, and said something about how he doesn't believe that and that he was going to try to stick around as long as he could, and that God was probably a vegan when he was on Earth too.  I found it sort of hilarious because he seems like your traditional Texan guy with a southern accent, yet in some ways his words could have been attributed to your stereotypical Californian.  He wasn't preachy about it, but he did defend his new lifestyle and I hope it continues to work for him.

Oh, and the thing I mentioned about soy products causing problems if you want to have another kid can be found on the BBC's site if you want to read more.  The studies are still early, but in talking with Chinese people about eating soy products it sounds like it's something obvious to them.

very little soy... by clock (2.00 / 0) #5 Thu Aug 28, 2008 at 11:00:30 AM EST
...i can dig tofu once in a while, but it's no staple.  as for stacky''s dad:  he's an old OK steak and potatoes guy gone totally vegan and it's hilarious.  i'm really impressed with his take no prisoners life change.  but he does preach a little.  i'm still putting milk on my cereal despite having going very vegetarian.  i don't see a vegan lifestyle for me as long as there are good eggs in this world.

i seafood!  i'm all over it!  and i know that stacky gets into it too.  we'd love to hang out with you guys whenever.  we're always up for some chillin' with folks who know how much work that entails.

also: go brats!

Soy milk is pretty good by debacle (4.00 / 1) #8 Thu Aug 28, 2008 at 01:44:28 PM EST
Very good, if you get the unsweetened kind.

ah, Dad..... by StackyMcRacky (2.00 / 0) #10 Thu Aug 28, 2008 at 04:13:33 PM EST
At his annual cardio work up earlier this year, they found the plaques in his arteries had grown from 17% to 35% since he's been in Houston.  He's on all kinds of drugs that are supposed to be preventing that kind of thing from happening, so he got pissed off.  His research led him to [The China Study http://www.amazon.com/China-Study-Comprehensive-Nutrition-Implications/dp/1932100660/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1219954118&sr=8-1], which led him to going vegan.

Normally, he's annoyingly preachy about it (as I'm feeding The Dude grilled cheese, "That stuff will kill him!"), but I'm betting that conversation you overhead was with Cousin G, and there's no winning her over to a healthy lifestyle.  She's the Queen of "Eat, Drink, and Be Merry" in a very New Orleans way.

I knew some of that stuff about soy, which is why I tend to avoid it.  Tofu every now and again is good, but soy-based "meats" and "cheeses" every day is just bad, IMO.

He's a good guy by theboz (2.00 / 0) #12 Thu Aug 28, 2008 at 04:25:32 PM EST
If that would have helped my grandfather, I would have preached to him about it years ago too.  It's good that it is helping your dad, and that he will be around longer because of it.

according to his research by StackyMcRacky (2.00 / 0) #13 Thu Aug 28, 2008 at 08:26:46 PM EST
after going vegan for 1 year, it can reduce artery plaques by 7%.  we'll see what his checkup is like next year.
