  • I told my boss about my plans on Friday. He was enthusiastic, actually, and told me the job is still mine when I get back. The conversation couldn't have gone better.
  • I bought travel insurance on Sunday so I can be airlifted out of the jungle without losing my life savings.
  • I fully loaded the pack and ran around the apartment wearing it. I think it weighs 20 lbs. Not too bad. With only 35 liters of space I couldn't put much more in there anyway.
  • I'm going to a travel clinic on Friday for some hot needle action.
to do:
  • Get a 5x10 storage space
  • Sell my car (I've finally got the ball rolling on this one - about 16 months late, heh)
So for the first leg, I'm planning on hanging out in Auckland / surrounding areas for 5-7 days, fly to Christchurch, rent a car, tootle around the south island, and day hike wherever I feel like it for the remainder of the month.

not sure if I'll do much blogging, but my flickr account will certainly be active.

When I'm imprisoned as an enemy combatant, will you blog about it?

on the Super Ferry. The ladies are travel agents and were on a work conference headed to Waikiki and very friendly. Maybe you want their info? Your trip sounds like fun.

good salary, no wife, no kids, no insane mortgage payment, no "material" goals. It took 16 months of saving. I also sold a few things and got some bonus money at work, although never of those are a big chunk of the total.

When I'm imprisoned as an enemy combatant, will you blog about it?

sure. by garlic (2.00 / 0) #17 Tue Aug 26, 2008 at 09:12:37 PM EST
that's what I meant. I'm in a similar situation, except I have the mortgage.

Time to get moving:

Bottom line: if you are an American and plan on seeing the world, better do it sooner rather than later.

I'm more worried about oil / energy / food prices than global rebalancing.
